The recruiting department can login and check the status of the application at any time. The software keeps track of the status of each application, notifies staff members of steps that need to be taken and generates reports that provide management of an overview of when the new employees are expected to be available for project work. When the visa is approved, the information that was entered in the immigration module automatically transfers over to the PeopleSoft human resources module. The system will not move an applicant onto the employment rolls until all of the necessary documentation has been completed.
H1-B visas are issued for a limited period of time, normally one to three years. The immigration module keeps track of expiring visas and notifies the legal department so that an extension can be applied for in plenty of time. There is also a six-year limit on the total life of an H1-B visa. Well before this limit expires, the immigration module notifies the legal department that it’s time to begin the process of filing for permanent residency. This is a complicated process involving 20 to 40 discrete steps. Each step requires contacting the INS and filing certain documents or records. The immigration module monitors every step of the process, keeping track of which steps have been completed and which need to be done at any given time. The system greatly improves the productivity of the legal staff by making it possible to easily identify all employees for whom a certain step needs to be completed, so they can be done together in a batch. Oracle on Monday announced upgrades to both its JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and JD Edwards World software.
Both are the first major product releases in three years. One expert said that inventory features in JDE World 9.3 and reporting features in JD EnterpriseOne 9.1 are what caught his eye.
Al Marmero, a JD Edwards product manager and SearchOracle.com expert, said he liked the JD Edwards World General Ledger inventory detail reconciliation ability.
“This has been a long-awaited feature that currently is supported by third-party tools,” Marmero said. “This will save users money.”
Marmero also liked a new feature in EnterpriseOne called OneView Reporting, which Oracle claims will allow business users to create more custom reports on their own without help from IT.
Oracle has been busy with periodic JD Edwards updates, supporting mobile devices and releasing JD Edwards Enterprise Tools 9.1 in December. Bob Monahan, Oracle JD Edwards senior director, said the company has filed for almost 20 patents around JD Edwards EnterpriseOne in recent months.
Probably the biggest new feature of the EnterpriseOne 9.1 enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is OneView Reporting. Monahan said it will allow business users to drill into data more easily. For example, a user might want to dig into a pie chart to look at a particular sales region and see the customers there.
“It’s meant for the end users,” Monahan said. “They don’t require IT to do it for them.”
EnterpriseOne 9.1 also includes features around vertical industries like agribusiness and real estate, addressing specific industry-related compliance issues.
JD Edwards World 9.3 is another ERP package, with its customers running the platform on IBM i, commonly known as the AS/400 or iSeries. The inventory feature provides reports that compare different ledger transactions to assist the reconciliation process. Other features of JD Edwards World 9.3 are support for PDF export and XML import, as well as additional role-based capabilities to improve security.
Oracle made the announcement at Collaborate, a conference of Oracle user groups being held in Las Vegas this week. Both products are generally available starting Monday. Monahan wouldn’t say exactly how many JD Edwards customers there are, but did say it is “in the thousands.”
